The yakisugi “shou sugi ban” heat treatment process leaves the wood naturally resistant to pests, moisture, and fire. The basis of design for yakisugi “shou sugi ban” is that the heat treatment makes a coating unnecessary. Leaving the charred wood unoiled allows it to weather naturally, according to the local climate. Suyaki is an extremely delicate soot surface that easily blemishes. Bundles and planks must be handled and installed with extreme care. Please make sure that the installers have reviewed samples and are aware of the need for special handling before the lumber arrives at site.

Our Pika-Pika® yakisugi “shou sugi ban” products receive a double brushing to remove all loose soot. This reveals a textured wood surface with striped grain patterns. We then apply three coats of a warranted acrylic coating prior to shipment. This combination is suitable for both exterior siding and interior paneling.
